Macy’s Passport to Glamour

This year’s Macy’s Passport Fashion Show on Sept. 20 at the Herbst Pavilion encompassed glamour, celebrities, acrobats, athletes, ethnic dancers, children and burlesque queen Dita Von Teese, who moved gracefully and seductively.

On the runway at the silver anniversary event were well-tailored ensembles, suits, coats, jackets, leather boots, belts, colorful shoes, hats and accessories.

The high-quality, wearable clothing came in tweeds, argyles and knitwear inspired by Vivienne Westwood, milliner Philip Treacy, Mark Ecko, Calvin Klein and the creative collections of eight students from the Academy of Art University. Other collections included Levi’s, MAC Viva Glam and Epic Threads.

Interspersed with the impressive collections were the Spirit of Uganda Dancers, Cirque du Soleil performers, and finally the show’s exciting grey and silver designs by Anna Sui, Elie Tahari, Hugo Boss, Jennifer Lopez, Tommy Hilfiger, Kenneth Cole and Michael Kors.

Guests at the fabulous gala evening show were treated to well-choreographed contortionists, while imbibing tantalizing hors d’oeuvres from Asia de Cuba. Well-dressed attendees wore mostly strapless dresses, stiletto heels and strappy sandals, while most men wore dark suits.

A lively auction was conducted by Narsai David, and musician Carlos Santana popped up on the runway to autograph his guitar to one lucky lady, who donated $10,000 to charity.

Macy’s has raised $25 million during the past 25 years of the fashion show for the prevention, care and research of HIV/AIDS. A nifty sum with a raucous, fun and exciting show.

Circle your calendars for another great fashion show on Oct. 6 at the Marriott Hotel in the City.

Friends of On Lok will present their 19th annual Generations Fashion Gala with a silent auction at 11 a.m. and a lunch and fashion show at noon.

Fashions will be by Max Nugus Haute Couture and Oilily, honoring four generations of Bessie Woo and featuring the Grant Avenue Follies, Miss Asian America Pageant contestants and On Lok Lifeways participants. Event co-chairs are Gayle Chan, Celia Chang and Irene Yee Riley. All proceeds will benefit the On Lok Seniors Center.
