Asian Am. Accountants Give Back to Community

December 4, 2007

Ascend: The National Asian American Society of Accountants is toasting the end of the year with a holiday reception on December 6 in San Francisco.

Although they organize various community service programs throughout the year, this is the first time the two-year-old group (formerly know as the Asian American Society of CPAs) is having charity organizations at their annual holiday event. Representatives from 10 community affiliations will attend the reception, “Giving Back to the Community.”

“It is a privilege to help our community,” said Anna W. M. Mok, president of the group’s San Francisco chapter and partner of strategic clients at Deloitte & Touche LLP. “Our goal in showcasing these organizations is to bring more visibility to the wonderful services they are providing to the community, assist them with their volunteer programs and help them develop potential donor relationships.”

Self-Help for the Elderly’s fund development director Josephine Ma said Ascend has sponsored their Longevity Walkathon for two years. “They had over 30 people walk in it this year and helped us raise over $3,000 for 2007,” Ma said, adding that Ascend members have also advised low-income seniors on their taxes.

The reception will feature a panel of speakers discussing their experiences of making a charitable impact in the community. Speakers include Ophelia Basgal, PG&E vice president of civic partnership and community initiatives; Mohan Gyani, Roamwave vice chairman and former executive vice president and chief financial officer of Air Touch; Doreen Woo Ho, president of Consumer Group and Wells Fargo Bank executive vice president; Yul Kwon, board member of the Asian American Donor Program and winner of Survivor: Cook Islands; David Lei, vice chairman of the Asian Art Museum and former United States international trade commissioner; and Ling-Chi Wang, U.C. Berkeley retired professor and community activist.

Companies sponsoring the event are Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, KPMG, McKesson and PG&E. The event will be co-hosted by Corporate Asian American Employee Network, a network of Asian American employee resource groups from the private, public and educational sectors in the Bay Area, and ORIENTED, a global network of international professionals interested in Asian businesses and partnerships.
