Would You Vote for a Methodist?
January 1, 2008
Take a good look again at the Republican presidential candidates. Ron Paul beats Hillary to a race to get out of Iraq. Vietnam POW McCain is still a big war hero in Little Saigon, USA. Rudy ran the second most liberal city in the nation, but doesn’t believe every Bible story and doesn’t dispute the right of privacy (that’s code for abortion). But why is the press making a big deal about people who won’t vote for Mormons like Mitt Romney? It’s the evangelists who doubt that Mormons (or Catholics for that matter) are proper Christians. Liberals are aghast at rules against black priests before 1978.
So who’s intolerant when former Democratic advisor Lawrence O’Donnell calls The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “racist,” “ridiculous” and says the faith is “based on the work of a lying, fraudulent, criminal named Joseph Smith?” Could any Mormon sermon be as racially divisive as Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., Obama’s pastor, railing regularly against White Supremacy? Will our children be singing songs based on a future address by Obama echoing Wright’s sentiment that “Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run?”
You might not believe that Joseph Smith translated a King James version of the works of Christ in the New World. Neither did the mob that murdered him. But is that really any crazier than believing that three kings followed a star to a manger with a child born of a virgin? Or that he would grow up to walk on water and inspire contemporary Christian radio stations? Would you vote for somebody who believes Jews are the one God’s only chosen people? Does Hillary believe humanity is just the chance result of 13 billion years of unlikely accidents?
Somebody please ask Barack: Why do public schools require children to believe one version of creation when God teaches another? Hillary, what is a bad reason for an abortion? Should the federal government favor Asians over whites, or vice versa?
Maybe what really has people worried is that these guys are so straight, it’s scary. Not even Asian parents require you to give to your church, stay married, have lots of kids, no abortions, no drugs, no smokes, no beer, and no $5 lattes.
The real tough question is: Are you seriously going to vote for the candidate married to a man made infamous for qualifying what constituted having sex with an intern?

Got something to say?

The dollar slid across the board on Friday as data showing a 9 percent decline in sales of new U.S. homes last month heightened concern about the economy, putting the greenback on track for its worst week in more than a year.
The housing report, which was weaker than economists had expected, also bolstered the case for more Federal Reserve interest rate cuts in 2008. Earlier this week, the S&P/Case-Shiller index showed a record decline in U.S. home prices in October.
This is what’s happening to YOUR house. All the ‘money’ and ‘equity’ you thought you had saved - eliminated! The equity through falling house prices - and the money because we are DEBASING OUR CURRENCY. That low fed rate you’re reading about gets created by printing money and lending it to people. With more money, the money YOU have is worth LESS. So your money is worth less and your property is worth less - where can you turn to keep ahead of inflation? I think you BETTER turn to Dr. Paul. He’s the ONLY one running that has a HOPE of being able to deal with this.
Great points. Very a propos. I would add that bigotry is alive and well (unfortunately) among both Pharisees (on the right) and Sadducess (on the left).
A small clarification… Joseph Smith did not translate a “King James version of the works of Christ in the New World”. He translated a record of the people who lived on the American continent between 600 BC and 420 AD. The record was recorded on gold plates by Mormon, hence the name “Mormons”. The record does include an account of Jesus Christ appearing to the people after his acension in the old world.
In “king james” version, I’m referring to the use of the same language as the King James bible even though English had evolved quite a bit by the time Smith got to it. Call me a skeptic, but like I pointed out, there’s no shortage of “crazy” beliefs in either mainstream Christianity or Judaism if we’re going to start nitpicking beliefs. If you like Ron Paul, by all means support him (I’m a libertarian supporter as well), if he’s not elected this time, he’s make one heck of a showing for a supposed nobody, and it will pave the way f0r more like him. My understanding is that he’s even attracted some Democrats that are unhappy with Hillary and Obama. Paul has raised more money in WA than McCain or Huckabee.
