In the response to recent customer demand and supply shortages, Bay Area Costco stores anticipate increasing rice prices across the board.
Prices for Super Lucky Elephant jasmine rice stayed constant for the week at $21.99 per 50lb. bag and $10.99 per 25 lb. bag. A 50 lb. bag of Calrose rice currently goes for $15.99.
All of the branches contacted by AsianWeek on Thursday evening were out of stock of Super Lucky Elephant rice and were either out or nearly so with Calrose. Many clerks said that shipments have been sporadic and the best way to find out about incoming stock is to simply visit the store.
A clerk at the San Leandro branch said that 25lb. bags will rise from $15.99 to $16.99 and that 50lb. bags will rise from $21.99 to $27.99 early next week.
A clerk at Hayward said that 50lb. bags of jasmine rice, currently priced at $20.29, would leap to $30.99 towards the end of the month, while 25 lb. bags would jump approximately $5 from $15.59.
