APA Outpouring Of Support for China Quake Victims

May 16, 2008

As the emotional aftershocks of the Sichuan earthquake disaster continue the world over, Asian American communities across the United States are rallying together to lend support for their overseas brethren.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese Americans can trace their ancestral roots back to the affected regions and many still have family there, whom they are having trouble contacting because of the heavily damaged local infrastructure.

As of Wednesday, May 14, the official Xinhua News Agency said the death toll had exceeded 12,000, with over 50,000 lost or missing.

Many Asian American organizations have begun accepting donations toward relief efforts in China.

“We’re asking people to pray for these victims,” said Yuru Chou, chapter secretary of the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation of Queens, N.Y. “Our philosophy is that whatever you do will help.”

“Communications are not yet fully up in the heaviest hit areas in Sichuan,” New York City Councilman John Liu said. “But it’s heartening to know New Yorkers are stepping up with expressions of sympathy and offers of aid relief. This is once again about people coming together to help others in need.”
