The karaoke contest became an attraction at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration two years.
Judged and hosted by Ed Villa Carlos of EVC Entertainment and his DJ friends, the contest has attracted a variety of people with different musical tastes, from amateurs to professionals.
In 2006, after Carlos heard that Mayor Gavin Newsom would be passing the karaoke stage, he got the Mayor to sing Tony Bennett’s classic, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
This year there will be no contest; anyone who musters up the courage to karaoke in front of fellow fairgoers can, and Carlos will make sure the stage stays alive with singers.
“I’ll be trying to pick people out of the streets to get them to come up and sing,” said Carlos, adding that a T-shirt or a small gift will go to those who participate.
Look for Carlos and the karaoke show at the AHSC this year at the Sutter Street Stage, Saturday, May 17, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
