Asian-Majority Fremont School District Seeks Funding School Board urges Chinese parents to support Measure B

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Cupertino Chinese School parents discussed on May 9 Fremont Union High School District’s Measure B, a measure on the June 3 primary ballot that will allow the district to sell $198 million in bonds to raise money for its five schools.

The Chinese school, which includes some students from the Fremont Union High School District, uses the facilities at Monte Vista High on Friday evenings.

Of the approximate 10,316 FUHSD students, 50.2 percent are Asian, and the district ranks second highest academically out of Santa Clara County’s five districts. Two schools in the Fremont District, Lynbrook High and Monte Vista, have Asian student populations of 74.5 percent and 69.1 percent, respectively.

County-wise, FUHSD is the lowest-funded, receiving $9,050 of revenue per student; the statewide average is $9,508.

If Measure B passes, the money will go toward projects like solar power; renovating worn-down athletic fields and kitchen facilities; upgrading computers; replacing aging heating, lighting, plumbing and electrical systems; and creating classrooms for career and technical education courses.

Hung Wei, who is on the board of trustees and is a member of the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, said, “We are here to educate all children. … The idea to educate only one’s own children does not work.”
