Letters to the Editor: KPIX: The New KRON?, Supporting Prop E, Jindal: First APA President?, and Bad Advice

KPIX: The New KRON?
KPIX made a really bad mistake of firing Rick Quan and others from the station (“Rick Quan Fired,” Emil Amok, May 16). Their attempt to get more ratings by competing against the king of 10 p.m. news (KTVU) was a terrible idea. It also made a lot of fans of Family Guy upset because KPIX also owns the CW44, where they cut the back-to-back episodes down to one episode to compete against KTVU.

Looks like KPIX may turn into the new KRON — a terrible, low-budget news channel.

Supporting Prop E
You acknowledge that a third of San Francisco’s population is Asian, yet you claim that we can’t find at least one environmental policy expert, or one finance whiz, or one public utilities or water systems specialist, or one ratepayer or consumer advocate, or even a general member of the public out of all those folks (“No on Proposition E,” editorial, May 9). Give me a break!

You claim Prop E will politicize the process; exactly the opposite is true. The current situation politicizes the process. Historically mayors have appointed political and social buddies, not people qualified to oversee a multibillion-dollar utility. The same mayors have ripped off the revenues of the Public Utilities Commission, resulting in the current need to spend $4.3 billion to fix the system.

Jindal: First APA President?

Remember, McCain is old enough to croak at any moment (“Are You Ready for McCain/Jindal?,” Emil Amok, May 9). We may have the first Asian American president as early as 2009!

In reality, very few Asians are truly liberal Democrats. Most Asians are fiscally conservative, upwardly mobile and stand to benefit from Republican economic policies. Nonetheless, many Asians shifted toward the Democratic camp in recent years due to concern about white nativism in the Republican Party.

If, however, whites show willingness to share power with Asians, as symbolized by McCain-Jindal, Asians would welcome the historic opportunity and join the ruling whites as equal partner.

Bad Advice
In the April 25 Ask Q column, Q ended by saying, “If he asks who you voted for, you can 1) lie, 2) say it’s your right to keep it confidential, or 3) hit him again with full force.”

As a social worker of 33 years experience, I have seen over and over again the damage done to individuals, relationships and families by lies and violence.  Q should have advised either telling the truth or keeping it confidential, and he should have recommended family therapy and/or anger management. What if his partner hit back, a fight ensued and something truly terrible happened? What would Q’s legal liability be for the advice he gave?  AsianWeek might not want to find out the hard way.

Correction: A photo in the Commerce briefs section of the May 16 issue about Christine Chin’s resignation as publisher of the Coloradoan was incorrect; the name of the publication was also misspelled. A photo in the Bay briefs section of the same issue about Asian Americans for Community Involvement honoring Jeffery Lee, DDS, was also incorrect.

    Bravo, guys:
NEVER be afraid to acknowledge errors.
You will gain respect by so doing.
Publishing monoliths like the NYTimes find it almost impossible, despite the presence of so-called “public” advocates on staff, to admit the likes of their redolent responsibilities in re the pillorying of one Wen-ho Lee.
I, personally, have a very tiny and minor quarrel with their “arts” and “entertainment” reporting wherein they ignore the larger truth as they promote a smaller lie, on a technicality at that.
As for the above re-runs that includes In-Chul Sohn’s hilarious efforts at shoring up awarthur’s apologias for McCain come November, his APA “conservative” votes thzat is, all I can say is that ANY APA who ignores the theoneocon “end-game” of endless war and the innate threat to ALL those of “Asian” heritage, has forgotten that Dennis Kearny lives. In these very columns.
And I, personally, find his plea to “our” pocketbooks not only demeaning, but insulting.
As for Bobby Jindal “sharing” power on “our” behalf, forget it. The kid’s a brown banana.

P.S.: Today’s online London Guardian features a stark report on one 40-year-old mother’s weekly “menu” for hereself and her little seven-year-old daughter. The mom heroically strives to maintain the tot’s healthy diet, the while she denies herself all but sustenance. Sohn should read that and wonder about his self-serving service of our Radical Right’s ravagings of “human rights” all over this globe. Nota bene too that said “human rights” orgs have finally placed Uncle right up there with the cadres on the Mainland as prime culprits. About time. But note well also that they have yet to notice that the “war” on “terrorism” in Iraq and environs is a far greater travesty on said “human rights.”
And about which, you should also read the emeritus rabbi Dr. J. David Goldberg’s meditation on Israel’s 60th birthday. Rev. Chow should read it as well. As should ANYone who claims to be a decent and just human being.
Mr. Sohn claims only to ladder-climbing and power-sharing. Dommage, que lastima, and a Sharon Stone curse as well.

Got something to say?
