Indian Dancers Set New Record

CUPERTINO, Calif. — A new Guinness Book world record was set on June 21 as 318 dancers performed the ancient Indian classical dance form of Kuchipudi at the International Kuchipudi Conference at De Anza College.

The feat was observed and authenticated by Danny Girton of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Conference organizers Silicon Andhra also held a June 21 parade on the streets of Cupertino, called Kuchipudi Shobha Yatra, led by Mayor Dolly Sandoval and other local dignitaries as well as gurus who have kept the art form alive. Also on display were several festive statues brought from Kuchipudi village in India.

The conference, attended by 2,000 participants from all over the globe, also featured several performances by Kuchipudi dance schools in the USA and grand ballads conducted by renowned dance teachers on the main stage at the Flint Center for Performing Arts. Dozens of informative and scholarly presentations on the Kuchipudi dance and art form were also presented by researchers and teachers.
