LOGO Lesbian Reality

Gimme Sugar is like The Hills with cast members trying to make their way through a staged world called Life. But the difference between the two, other than social class (Hills is trust fund and Sugar is white-collar working), is the generally sincere message that friendship is key for the girls of Sugar. The superficial difference is these girls are lesbians.
Gimme Sugar is aired on LOGO, the new lesbian and gay channel run by MTV Networks. MTV catapulted the genre “reality television” before the term was even coined with its wildly popular The Real World.
Three of the six main Gimme Sugar cast members are young Asian American women, making this essentially the first reality show dedicating space to our race and the kinder, gentler sex — a stereotype they like to blow up every now and again. Philippine-born Charlene is the manager of a hot nightclub in Los Angeles called Truck Stop and mama hen to the rest of the girls. Her professional success inspires the girls to start a nightclub themselves, creating a conflict of interests whereby the girls have to make it on their own. Promiscuous Devonee, with her ultra-short rocker-style hair and I-don’t-care attitude, is a player on the club scene (though a dedicated girlfriend waits for her in the wings). Promotional model Bathilda is Devonee’s counterpart: ultra fem with long locks streaked ash blonde, Bathilda is quiet, ditzy and still very much in love with her ex-girlfriend.
These young ladies are far from perfect, which is part of the appeal: They fight, cheat and are unintelligible at times. But there is a real sense of camaraderie running against the grain of typical reality TV programming; it’s a breath of fresh air. Though the sixth and last episode for the pilot season ended just last week, it’s worth catching the reruns. I’m betting the network will turn out a second season as quickly as Devonee in a make-out session with another girl.
In other reality TV programs: Angie of Big Brother 10 is sitting in the hot seat this week unless she can spread dislike for body building Jessie; Katee and Mark of So You Think You Can Dance made it to the next round on the former’s talent and the latter’s personality; and it was time for America’s Best Dance Crew Supreme Soul to watch their banner fall — though skill took them far, America never did warm up to their braggadocio behavior.
