Presidential Campaign Update

August 14, 2008

Senator McCain sent condolences to the families of the Vietnamese American Catholics involved in the deadly car accident in Texas en route to the Marian Day pilgrimage in Carthage, Mo., on August 8.

Attendance at the fifth annual Virginia Asian Festival was phenomenal. Greetings from Senator McCain were delivered at the opening ceremony by Congressman Tom Davis. Volunteers from both campaigns were on hand to greet the attendees and Kids for McCain lemonade was a big hit.

APA grassroots organizations for McCain recently kicked off several independent websites: asianamericansformccain.org, southasiansformccain.com and apaformccain.org.

On August 9 and 10, more than 20 supporters volunteered with Filipinos for Obama at the 15th Annual Pistahan Festival, the largest gathering of Filipinos in the Bay Area. After marching in the parade, volunteers staffed a table in Yerba Buena Gardens, distributing “Filipinos for Obama” buttons and registering voters. The group registered 50 voters and recruited more than 100 new volunteers.

The Obama campaign last week announced new members of the Asian American and Pacific Islanders for Obama Leadership Council, a group that was established in October 2007. The three co-chairs of the Leadership Council - Nancy Chen, Ann Kalayil and Stan Toy - were instrumental in introducing Senator Obama to the AAPI community during the primary season.

The council now has executive and steering committees that add AAPI supporters of former presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards. See a list of the leadership council members on asianamericansforobama.com.

On August 11, Asian Americans for Obama and South Asians for Obama hosted a special event with Kal Penn in northern Virginia at the home of Toby Chaudhuri and Ruby Roy. Kudos to Joe Montano, Northern Virginia Democratic political director, and to Caroline Grey, Obama Northern Virginia regional field director.
