Free and Reduced Lunches for Unified School Districts

August 21, 2008

Applications Now Available

Free or reduced-price meal applications are available in unified school districts under the 2008-2009 National School Lunch, School Breakfast and After School Snack Program.

Unsubsidized meals typically cost $1.50 for breakfast, $2 for elementary lunch, $2.50 for middle school lunch and $3 for high school lunch.

Depending on the number of children per home and household income, students may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. For San Francisco, the eligibility scale starts with a head of household earning $13,520 or less annually and supporting one child (the student would receive free meals). At the other end of the scale is a $65,860 or less annual salary supporting eight children in a single household (these students would receive reduced-price meals).

Children receiving food stamps, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments (Kin-GAP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) are eligible for free meals regardless of household income.

Applications at all schools and Child Development Centers are available in English, Chinese and Spanish at the beginning of the school year. Applications are also available for pre-K district students enrolled in the Child Development Program under the 2008-2009 Child Care Food Program.
