Presidential Campaign Update

August 21, 2008

John McCain Campaign’s Asian American Coalition continues to grow in size and strength with the recent addition of the Asian American CEOs for McCain, which will hold its inaugural meeting in Flushing, New York, on August 22. Other additions include the Indo-Americans for McCain Coalition co-chaired by Sudhakar Shenoy of Virginia, Vishal Verma of California and Puneet Ahluwalia of Virginia. The Korean Americans for McCain Coalition was formed this week, co-chaired by the Hon. Michelle Park Steel of California, Sunny Park of Georgia, Charles Kim of California, Song Park of Virginia and Harold Pyon of Virginia.

The leadership of these APA Coalitions will continue to expand as many Asian Americans join forces to support Senator McCain. Interested parties can contact APA4McCain@gmail.com for more information regarding joining any of these coalitions.

Barack Obama-surrogate Kelly Hu stars in a new non-partisan AAPI get-out-the-vote public service announcement for the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment. Kelly joined George Takei and director George Huang in donating their valuable time and talent for the PSA, “Embrace Your Power,” which encourages AAPIs to vote in the November 4 election. See the video at asianamericansforobama.com.

More than 1,800 people attended a series of fundraisers Sunday that together raised $7.8 million for the campaign. Congressman Mike Honda and San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris were among the guests at the fundraiser hosted by the Asian American Finance Committee, DNC Indo-American Leadership Council and South Asian American Leadership Council.

At the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver next week, various AAPI organizations, including APA for Progress, will hold AAPI events.

The convention will be the most diverse in the Democratic Party’s history. With more than 44 percent of the elected delegates representing communities of color, over 50 percent are women and more than 31 percent are either seniors or youth. More women, African Americans, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, GLBT delegates and delegates with disabilities will attend the convention than ever before.

On the last night of the convention, join us in San Francisco to watch Senator Obama’s historic speech as he accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination for President.

The speech-watching party is on Thursday, August 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roe Restaurant, 651 Howard Street. It is also a fundraiser for Eric Mar, a longtime Obama supporter, in his bid for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors with Jenn Pae and Brian Wang, two convention delegates pledged to Sen. Obama. A suggested $20 donation is requested. RSVP to speech@apaforobama.com.
