Karma or Numerology on China’s Medal Count?
August 26, 2008

Internet broad band connections in China are being flooded with notions that the medal count numbers (51 gold medals, 22 silver medals, 28 bronze medals) look strikingly similar to the date and time of one of China’s most devastating natural catastrophes, the Sichuan Earthquake (May 12, 2:28pm or 5-12, 2:28). Are the powers beyond human comprehension trying to warn us of a bigger disaster? Should we prepare for the worst?
Didn’t we cover a story in AsianWeek about Asians being overly superstitious? Well, if you didn’t read that article 10 years ago, let me remind you that Asians are, for the most part, superstitious.
Superstitious or not, you can relax. According to the official medal count, China only won 21 silver medals. So, therefore, the “message in the numbers” don’t quite match up. Furthermore, the Olympics are over, so there’s no chance for anyone to win one more silver medal. Or is there? Check out this story from another source in China!
