Under the Sea: New Coral Reef Exhibit at Academy of Sciences

SAN FRANCISCO-The Philippine Coral Reef Exhibit was unveiled to the media at a press conference on August 28 at the California Academy of Sciences.

For the first time the media was able to see architect Renz Piano’s 212,0000-gallon tank, which contained the many species of fish and coral reefs of the Philippines.

The tank is the deepest and largest of it’s kind in North America.

Kent Carpenter, a scientist from the Smithsonian Institute and Dr. Terry Gosliner from the Academy said that the Philippines have the highest marine biodiversity in the world.

The Philippine media was encouraged to spread the word about the exhibit to the Filipino community to become more active participants stating that “the preservation of their coral reefs in any way possible.”

Consul General Maciano A. Paynor Jr. of the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco said that the opening of the exhibit could be something the Filipino community can be proud of.

“Through this exhibit, environmental and educational awareness about our coral reefs will be heightened,” said Paynor.

Speakers at the press conference were Dr. Margaret Burke, Director of Education, and Dr. Terry Gosliner, Senior Curator of Invertebrate Zoology, both from the California Academy of Sciences; Malou Babilonia, Founder and Member of the Board of Trustees of Pusod, an environmental NGO based in Manila, Philippines and in Berkeley, CA; and Consul General Paynor.

The Philippine Coral Reef Exhibit will be open to the public on September 27.
