Dat Phan Joins Jade Ribbon Campaign
September 16, 2008
Funny man Dat Phan, the original winner of NBC’s popular show Last Comic Standing, recently agreed to endorse the Jade Ribbon Campaign.
“We are excited about his support and willingness to spread awareness about hepatitis B to the Vietnamese American community,” said Alena Groopman, the Asian Liver Center’s Global Community Health coordinator.
One in seven Vietnamese Americans is chronically infected with hepatitis B, and two out of three are unaware that they are infected.
Representatives from the Asian Liver Center and the Jade Ribbon Campaign distributed educational materials about the disease and liver cancer at his show at Tommy T’s Comedy Club in Pleasanton on Sept. 3.
“Hepatitis B is a disease that impacts our community, and it is something that we should all be aware of,” said Phan in an interview with the Asian Liver Center. “This is something that affects many people throughout the Bay Area. I’m glad to be a part of spreading the word and bringing awareness to more people.”
Phan has made numerous TV and movie appearances including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Family Guy voiceover and Cellular. Dat Phan Productions is working on several upcoming projects including a live DVD & CD to be released later in 2008 and preproduction on a movie titled Yellow Fever.
Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Phan grew up in San Diego, Calif. His culturally insightful comedy inspects ridiculous stereotypes and shares his experience of being a regular American guy with a Vietnamese heritage.
He has been included in The Smithsonian Institution’s exhibition of The Top 10 Most Influential Vietnamese-American Individuals.
