Philadelphia Chinatown Says No to Casino

Mayor Nutter, City Councilman Frank DiCicco and state Rep. Mike O’Brien have a meeting scheduled next week with the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corp. to discuss the proposal to move the Foxwoods casino from the Delaware Riverfront in South Philly to the Gallery in Center City.  From the talk at a PCDC meeting tonight, the community is very much opposed to the idea.

John Chin, PCDC’s executive director, called the proposed casino a “very, very bad idea” for Chinatown.  Chin is concerned that the casino’s investors have not shown any plans for what they hope to do at 11th and Market streets.

George Yep, owner of the East Asia Noodle Co., said traffic is already a problem for his business.  He offered up $500 on the spot to help PCDC hire an attorney.

The meeting will be on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church at 915 Vine St.

Inability to Sanitize Live Carp Ends Fishy Foot Treatments

For the past three weeks, scores of customers descended upon a nail salon in Kent.

They came from Idaho and Ohio and Minnesota. The appointment book was booked solid two months out.

They came to Peridot Nail Salon and parted with $30, so that for 15 minutes, tiny fish could nibble the dead skin off their feet.

Thursday, however, the Department of Licensing shut down Tuyet Bui’s, um, fishy operation, saying that the pedicures were illegal.

After conducting further research, the department decided that the pedicures were unsanitary and potentially unsafe.

Bui was personally delivered a letter Thursday informing her of the agency’s decision, which was based on a state law that all implements used in pedicures had to be “sanitized, disinfected, or disposed of after each service to protect salon customers from the possibility of disease and infections.”

Hers was the first salon in the state to offer the pedicures, which are popular in Turkey and Asia, and Bui said the treatment had garnered an enthusiastic response from customers.

She said she would start a petition for the state to take a closer look at the treatment and said that the pedicures are safe and sanitary.

Former Candidate Tan Nguyen Indicted Over Mailer Sent to Latinos

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A federal grand jury has indicted former GOP Congress candidate Tan Nguyen over a controversial 2006 mailer sent to Latino voters that warned immigrants against voting.

The letter, sent out in the waning days of Nguyen’s congressional campaign against Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez, was written in Spanish and triggered national headlines with many observers seeing it as the direct result of a long string of GOP candidates’ increasingly using anti-illegal immigration sentiment to get elected.

Students From Oakland and East Bay Rev Up for This Year’s Election

OAKLAND, Calif. — On October 4, over 150 high school students from Oakland and throughout the area will join at the Youth + Power = Change Conference. This conference is organized and led by Asian American young women from Asian Communities for Reproductive Justice (ACRJ) and is geared towards Asian youth and other young voters to learn about the importance of voting and this year’s California ballot.

Students will be welcomed by the Hip Hop Voter Registration Bus, a collaboration between AC Transit and Alameda County that transformed an AC Transit bus into a mobile voter registration vehicle, to travel throughout the county and register young voters.

Organizations like Chinese Progressive Association and Asian Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership are bringing their high school youth members to assemble and learn about ballot initiatives that affect them as youth and that directly affect their bodies, health and sexuality, i.e. Proposition 4 (Parental Notification Initiative), Proposition 6 (Runner Initiative) and Proposition 8 (Limit Marriage Initiative).

Supervisor Chu Announces $100,000 Grant for West Sunset Playground

Supervisor Carmen Chu announced that West Sunset Playground, one of the most heavily used recreation sites in the Sunset District, would receive a $10,000 challenge grant from PG&E in an effort to rebuild the playground.

“West Sunset Playground is a tremendous asset to our community, and we want to make sure that our families and children can continue to recreate here in the generations to come,” said Supervisor Carmen Chu. “An investment in West Sunset Playground is an investment in the future of our neighborhood.”

PG&E’s challenge grant will support the Friends of West Sunset Playground’s (FOWSP) effort to rebuild the playground, which is located in the midst of several schools, athletic fields, a library and thousands of families.

FOWSP, a community organization comprised of local parents, formed this year in response to the Neighborhood Parks Council’s 2008 assessment of the City’s parks, in which West Sunset Playground was deemed unsafe.

The name change is in response to the change in focus of JTAF from an anime convention to an event that focuses on the appreciation of arts and crafts inspired by the Japanese entertainment. HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Ji-Yai Shin became a household name back home in South Korea and even somewhat in Japan after she won the Women’s British Open in August.

She shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday to take the first-day lead in the Samsung World Championship, topping Paula Creamer’s 68 that featured a birdie on 17 following a bogey on the previous hole.

Yani Tseng, who is leading the Rookie of the Year race and ranked third, also had a 69.

Juanda Wins Fourth Bracelet

Four hundred eighty-four hands were played during the 19-hour final table at the World Series of Poker Europe main event. Exhausted from the day and proving that endurance is necessary during competition, John Juanda held his fourth bracelet, his first since 2003. Throughout the 39-year history of the World Series of Poker, Juanda’s victory over Stanislav Alekhin completed the longest final table, breaking the record of final-table hands by 130.

Those last two players that Juanda eliminated were the two Russians that started the final table, with tremendous weight on both their shoulders. Alekhin, at age 23, was making his first major live final table. Time and time again, the other players commented that he was impossible to read, including Juanda.

Juanda’s win, the first for an American at the WSOP Europe, was worth £868,800 and a bracelet he’ll never forget.

This event will be televised on ESPN in early 2009.

Vietnamese ‘Borats’ Cause a Storm

Two students who dressed up as the TV character Borat are at the center of a dispute in Vietnam.

The pair performed a dance act at a company party dressed as the spoof Kazakh journalist in his notoriously skimpy “mankini” swimming costume.

They have now found themselves suspended from college for 12 months.

The incident, dubbed the “nude dance of FPT Arena students,” has stirred up a storm on internet forums and also in the domestic media.

In a statement, FPT Arena said the organizers of the party did not know about the act in advance, adding that two of the firm’s executives had been sacked over the incident.

Hanoi Cultural Inspectorate on Tuesday fined the college 4m dong ($240; £135) for a number of offences including “use of improper clothing.”

Bollywood Actors and Crews Strike to Demand Better Pay

MUMBAI, India — The shining lights of Bollywood went dark Wednesday as actors, technicians and cameramen went on strike to demand better pay and overtime, halting dozens of movies and television productions.

A coalition of 22 unions representing more than 100,000 technicians, dancers and other film workers ordered its members not to show up for work, indefinitely shuttering one of the world’s most prolific movie industries.

More than 200 Hindi-language films are produced every year in Mumbai, home of India’s film industry known as Bollywood.

But while the films portray a world of glamour and feature lush production numbers, working conditions on the sets are notoriously poor. Workers who build movie sets or handle lighting get paid about $11 for long days without overtime.

The strike comes on the eve of Hindu festival season, when the industry launches its biggest films in hopes of capturing large audiences.
