Organ Recipients Compete on CYC Dragon Boat Team
October 3, 2008
The Community Youth Center of San Francisco’s dragon boat teams are hoping they’ll be able to deliver a victory and a message at this weekend’s San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival.
The California Transplant Donor Network is sponsoring the youth center’s teams, and six organ recipients will compete on the adult dragon boat team this year, with the hopes of showing the community that organ recipients can lead normal healthy lives.
“We hope to communicate to the public that transplantation really does work and really encourage people to sign up to become donors,” said Kate Andrew, manager of community affairs at California Transplant Donor Network.

Team member Jenna Dare said she has been able to lead a very active life since receiving a kidney from her mother 15 years ago.
“At first I had to miss some class because of doctor appointments,” Dare said. “As time went by, though, I began to get healthier and was able to participate in sports.”
Dare, who once got cut from the dragon boat team in high school, is excited by the chance to be on the team this year.
“Now I have the opportunity to show them what I can do,” said Dare.
