Probe Finds Ex-U.S. Attorney Retaliated Against Whistleblower
Former U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Rachel K. Paulose retaliated against a top prosecutor in her office who reported her for careless handling of classified homeland security reports, a watchdog agency said Wednesday.
In announcing a whistleblower settlement between Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marti and the Justice Department, the Office of Special Counsel said its investigation found that Paulose retaliated by taking steps to remove Marti as her first assistant. Marti accepted a demotion and returned to being an assistant U.S. attorney.
In a news release, OSC said: “Based on considerable evidence of intent, animus and motive, OSC concluded that Ms. Paulose constructively demoted Mr. Marti.”
Paulose had earlier been the subject of an Office of Special Counsel investigation into whether she’d discriminated against office employees, including allegedly using the words “fat,” “black,” “lazy” and “ass” in remarks to one employee.
Before that, Marti and three other top lawyers in Paulose’s office had voluntarily demoted themselves to protest her Christian-influenced managerial style.
Since last year, Paulose has been an adviser to Attorney General Michael Mukasey at main DOJ.

Berkeley City Council to Consider Urging Prosecution of John Yoo
Professor of Law John Yoo at Boalt Hall School of Law in Berkeley, Calif., (but a lawyer with the Pennsylvania bar from which he should be debarred and would be if enough people demanded it) who counseled the White House on how to get away with war crimes, wrote a memo promoting presidential power to launch aggressive war and claimed the power to decree that the federal statutes against torture, assault, maiming and stalking do not apply to the military in the conduct of the war and to announce a new definition of torture limiting it to acts causing intense pain or suffering equivalent to pain associated with serious physical injury so severe that death, organ failure or permanent damage resulting in loss of significant body functions will likely result.

Wie Shoots 65 to Share Early Lead at LPGA Q-school
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After hitting only four drivers on the Legends course Wednesday - a tighter, more punishing track - Michelle Wie was far more aggressive in the second round and holed enough putts for her lowest round on the LPGA Tour since a 65 at the Samsung World International in 2005, the week of her pro debut (which also ended in disqualification).
The longest putt she had for par came on No. 11, her second hole, when she ran a 25-foot birdie attempt four feet past the hole. Wie took only 24 putts, helped by three simple up-and-downs and a 40-foot chip she holed for birdie on No. 17.
That began the late run of birdies. She hit her tee shot to seven feet on the 145-yard sixth, holed another 7-foot birdie putt on the seventh hole and closed out her birdie string with an 8-foot putt.
Through two days on each course, Wie’s only mistake has been a three-putt bogey from 25 feet Wednesday.

Lip-Synch Ban for China TV Gala
China has banned lip-synching from the nation’s biggest TV show, held to celebrate Chinese New Year.
The broadcasting regulator has ordered organizers to pick “real” singers and songs with “healthy” lyrics.
The CCTV Spring Festival Gala attracts hundreds of millions of viewers with comedy sketches and patriotic-themed song-and-dance routines.
A lip-synching child who performed at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games embarrassed China.
Officials decided that the actual singer, a seven-year-old with crooked teeth, wasn’t pretty enough to be shown on TV.
Instead a nine-year-old girl who was deemed to look more suitable mouthed along to a recording, charming a worldwide audience and earning the title of China’s “smiling angel.”
The announcement follows last month’s news reports that the Ministry of Culture would revoke the licenses of professional performers who are caught lip-synching it twice during a two-year period.

Alzheimer’s Diagnosis and Treatment Remains Low in China
Decision Resources, one of the world’s leading research and advisory firms focusing on pharmaceutical and health care issues, initiated a new report that finds that the diagnosis and drug treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in China is extremely low and will remain low through 2012, particularly in rural regions.
Although rural cases of Alzheimer’s disease will account for approximately 70 percent of the prevalent Alzheimer’s disease population in China in 2012, less than 10 percent of cases will be diagnosed and even fewer will be treated with approved Alzheimer’s disease products
The report, entitled “Alzheimer’s Disease in China,” also finds that the Chinese Alzheimer’s disease drug market will continue to stay untapped and underserved despite growing use of approved therapies. The Chinese Alzheimer’s drug market is expected to reach a mere $33 million in 2012, due chiefly to the limited pool of treated patients and competition from older, entrenched medicines.

Man Killed in Malaysia for ‘
Hogging Karaoke’
A Malaysian man has been stabbed to death for refusing to stop singing and hand over the microphone at a karaoke bar, police say.
Abdul Sani Doli, 23, reportedly angered some of the customers when he hogged the stage at the bar in Sandakan town on eastern Borneo island. Witnesses said he was attacked, and the fight spilled out on to the street. He was punched before being stabbed to death with a knife. His body was found a short distance from the bar.
Sandakan’s police chief ACP Rosli Mohd Isa said two men were in police custody, helping them with their inquiries.
Karaoke, in which amateurs can sing along to their favorite songs, first emerged from Japan and became hugely popular across Asia during the 1980s, before spreading to other parts of the world.

Got something to say?

>Lip-Synch Ban for China TV Gala
LOL, piping hot crow casserole being served now to the regulars of the kneejerk sinodefense team.
Folks::
The Berkeley City Council may be wrong here, or “right” as the case may prove, but one John Yoo DESERVES to be outed, at the very least.
For what he cynically is/was and well may continue to be.
Not because he’s “Asian” or even because he is/was an opportunist who sold out to the highest bidder.
He is/was, at heart, just one more supplicant at the altar of Mammon.
AND position. Read “power.”
ANYone who can turn words, forget “reason,” into viable contradictions of themselves is worthy of at least an Ivy League doctorate. One from UCB? That as well.
Mayhap, even one in a growing Obamanation?
Today, at least one online “headline” notes that the ACLU has finally intervened in a Maryland State Police “surveillance” of nonviolent dissident groups.
In a state where, apparently, some hundred “crimes” occur daily, the security apparatus of the public “peace” and civic well-being chooses to waste untold (wo)man=hours “infiltrating” and documenting the “terrorist” activities of “nuns” and “peaceniks” and querulous quidnuncs.
Deja-vu?
In spades.
About 60 years ago, Jumpin’ Joe McCarthy was in the full flush of his demagogic zenith of idiotic political non-sequiturs, the high-feverish point of “commies” under the public bed.
Then, as today, the scenario was farce and not satire, and not half as entertaining or true as H.M.S. Pinafore. As in diapers for our “leaders,” who are crapping all over the rest of us.
So, guys and gals, welcome to the limboland of blacklists and graylists, and may you NOT have to travel by “air” and put up with the likes of ICE chief-high inspectors who are overpaid and underqualified.
For “Asian” Americans, i submit the considerably more significant piece on Info Clearing House today by a Lao American who cites verse, book, and chapter, of “our” mindless and heartless and couterproductive adventures in Laos at the end of the Vietnam War.
Read it and weep. Or shake your fist. Or, at the very least, stop and consider and then reorient your compass as to “hegemony” AND manifest destinies.
And then there’s the ICH piece by a convict no less about the inhumane conditions of our prison syustem, which, in turne, pale next to the self–righteous and punishing conditions of our regnant police and troops all over the globe, at home and abroad. As in what else is new, nu?
And Michzael Parenti, check him out too. American fascism is a fait accompli, and an ugly one at that, in view of the fact that we, today, have little or NO excuse to countenance same without, at the very least, “protesting.”
Bottom line: this is an “internal” struggle, as in between that which is in us that is noble and honorable, and that which is infra-dig and not worth the midden=heap of its leavings.
P.S.: The Laotian matter here is titled “:Legacies of War,” and its sponsors are both Lao American AND the American we all cherish and hope for and believe in,. race a0nd creed and color be damned.
