Robberies Targeting Asian Americans in Philadelphia Area
State and local authorities suspect that they’ve uncovered a shadowy organization that has been terrorizing Asian Americans in Philadelphia and Delaware County with a series of gunpoint robberies and home invasions over the past two years.
Two Southwest Philadelphia men were charged yesterday with mugging a Middletown couple last weekend. They have admitted to stealing about $5,000 in cash, credit cards and jewelry, including the pregnant woman’s wedding ring, police said.
The county saw three similar cases this week - two in Marple Township and one in Collingdale Borough - involving Asian business owners.
On Monday, three armed bandits broke into a home on Hampshire Drive in Marple and beat and robbed a man and his wife. Two nights later, a South Korean woman was robbed outside of her Marple home of a briefcase filled with about $1,500 in cash.
In Collingdale, masked gunmen climbed into the apartment above the China Moon Restaurant on MacDade Boulevard. An undetermined amount of money was stolen. One shot was fired, but no injuries were reported.

Unlicensed Chinese After-School Program Shut Down
BOSTON - An unlicensed after-school program that was shut down by police is now under investigation after some former students said that they suffered physical abuse.
More than 100 Chinese American children were enrolled at the Chung Yee School, which operated out of the Knights of Columbus Hall in North Quincy.
At least a dozen children have said they were abused, but there are no confirmed cases. The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office is investigating the allegations.
The school was abruptly closed this week because it lacked early-education licenses and did not have fire and health permits.

Muni Contractor Must Pay $37,000 for Anti-Chinese Harassment
SAN FRANCISCO - A contractor for San Francisco’s Municipal Railway will pay a $37,000 settlement to a Chinese American welder who said he suffered daily racial slurs and harassment from a foreman and was fired after he complained, a federal civil rights agency said.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit in July accusing Cadit Co. of violating federal law by allowing the foreman to harass Ru Jian Lin and by retaliating against him for reporting the harassment.
The federal agency said Lin, hired in June 2006, had been subjected to repeated abuse by a white foreman, who used terms like “ching, chang, chong” and “Chinaman.”
The agency said Lin first complained to his supervisor in mid-July 2006, spoke to him again when the harassment continued and was fired later that month.

New Television Campaign in Mandarin to Educate Chinese Americans About Chronic Hepatitis B
PRINCETON, N.J. - Today, Bristol-Myers Squibb announced the launch of its first-ever, non-English-language television campaign in the United States. The campaign, exclusively in Mandarin, seeks to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis B and encourages people to talk with their doctors about managing the disease - one that is disproportionately affecting the Chinese community.
The campaign features two chronic hepatitis B patients in 60-second television segments with an educational message about the importance of seeking appropriate care. The segments encourage people to start a dialogue with their health care provider about the disease. In addition, the campaign will be extended to reach additional Asian American audiences in 2009.

Liu Wei Suspended over Attack on American Player
BEIJING - Star Chinese point guard Liu Wei was suspended for 10 games and fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,300) for organizing an attack on an American player after a club game, China’s domestic league said.
Local media reports described the punishment of Liu as the largest-ever penalty meted out by the China Basketball Association (CBA).
Liu, who plays for the Shanghai Sharks, was suspended and fined for orchestrating the Nov. 28 attack on Gabriel Muoneke after the Sharks lost to Yunnan Honghe, the league said on its Web site.
Several of Liu’s teammates surrounded and threatened Muoneke in a stadium hallway after the game, the CBA said.
One of Liu’s teammates struck the U.S. player with a plastic water bottle.
Muoneke, who was accompanying his three children and wife out of the stadium at the time of the incident, was not hurt, it said.

India Calls for UN Ban on Pakistan Charity over Mumbai
DEHLI, India - India has demanded that the UN security council ban a Pakistan-based charity as a terrorist group and front for the radical armed group behind the Mumbai attacks - even as Pakistan confirms it has arrested another prominent Islamist wanted by Delhi.
Indian officials say Jemaat-ud-Dawa, which runs out of a sprawling complex outside Lahore, is a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which India blames for the killing spree in Mumbai that left more than 170 dead.
The charity has denied any links to Lashkar-e-Taiba, two members of which have been arrested by Pakistani security agents in recent days.
The Indian government’s foreign ministry expects that Jemaat, which helped rebuild shattered communities in Pakistani Kashmir after the 2005 earthquake, will be proscribed by the UN early next week with backing from the United States.
