The APEX of a New Generation

March 31, 2009

apex-09-board

When first generation Asian American immigrants came to America, they found themselves lost in a sea of unknowns. The long standing networks and relationships built not only over lifetimes but over generations were suddenly greatly diminished if not completely extinguished in a new country and home, and they found themselves starting everything from scratch.  Their children found themselves taking on more roles than the average kid, often translating at parent-teacher conferences or reading government and insurance notices that came in English-only.

Chinese American Heroines: Amy Yuen-Yee Chow

March 31, 2009

This is the second week of AsianWeek’s salute to Chinese American Heroes and you are in for a treat. We are honoring some (but not all) of the fabulous ladies at www.chineseamericanheroes.org. Last week we introduced one of the most successful Chinese American business executives in the Fortune 100 corporations, Ms. Christine Poon of Johnson & Johnson. This week we will take a look at fabulous ladies who have been doing “other fabulous” deeds, but not in the business arena. We will talk about an Olympic medal winner (perhaps not the one you might be thinking of), an architect, a film director, a former US Attorney and a historian.. Likely you have only heard about 2 or 3 of these heroines, so we encourage you to drop in everyday this week to find out about all of these super-women.

The Robert Wone Case and the Real Cowards

March 27, 2009

It’s ironic that Attorney General Eric Holder called Americans cowards for being reluctant to talk about race. Holder was the attorney for the widow of the late Robert Wone, yet even he declined to name any possible suspects in the murderer case. In contrast to the high profile reaction to the murder of Vincent Chin which was fairly well known even outside of Asian American, even most Asians are unfamiliar with the case of the attorney for Radio Free Asia who was brutally stabbed one evening in 2006 while sleeping over with some old friends in D.C. It’s been called one of the most mysterious cases in D.C. since no one was charged with anything for over 2 years. Yet even after the three men who lived at the house of the murder scene were finally charged at the end of 2008 with obstruction of justice, no one but anonymous blog comments are willing to even speculate on the possible suspects. The only thing mysterious is how such a slam dunk case could remain in such obscurity.

The resident of 1509 Swann St seemed like nice enough neighbors. Joe Price was a former attorney at the civil rights group Equality Virgnia who knew Wone from their days

Chinese American Heroes: Christine Poon

March 26, 2009

The heroic and notable contributions of many Chinese Americans to the United States and the world remain unrecognized and as Helen Zia says, “are missing in history.” Chinese American Heroes (CAH) hopes to change that by documenting the positive impact Chinese Americans have made, beginning with the railroad workers in the 1860s to contemporary icons like historian and journalist Iris Chang, architect I.M. Pei, and to lesser known heroes like Lieutenant Colonel Frank Fong. Co-founded by Roger Dong and Dr. David Chai, CAH utilizes the Internet to publicize Chinese American Heroes and Notables. Since its inception in 2007, CAH has compiled over 100 biographies and articles.

For the next 2 months, AsianWeek is proud to highlight CAH’s work, and will be running a new biography each day. To see the biographies of other Chinese American Heroes please visit: chineseamericanheroes.org
