Top social events for the month of April includes the American premier of a new contemporary Asian-American play, the American Hwangap, the spring kick-off of a High Tea Mixer of the new U.C. Suspense! Drama! A roller-coaster of a ride with a whole spectrum of emotions from love and passion to anger and comedy are neatly packaged in a new contemporary play American Hwangap written by a brilliant young new playwright Lloyd Suh, now at the Magic Theatre in Fort Mason.
Making its American Premier in San Francisco allows Bay Area audiences to give it their critiques and comments before going on to New York. Hwangap is a universal situation when an American-Korean family is separated and tries to come together to celebrate an Asian man’s big 60th Birthday.

American Hwangap is a catharsis of emotions, encompassing talent, artistry, culture an education despite its sometimes rough language. Play is at the Magic Theatre, San Francisco, Wednesday to Saturday 8:00 p.m., Sunday 2:30 p.m., until May 3. Supported by the Mellon Foundation and others, the play goes on to four cities.
At an Afternoon Tea and Informal Round Table Discussion, U.C. San Francisco’s Asian Heart and Vascular Center featured Dr. Elizabeth Chang, who spoke on Healthcare in Asia and the U.S. A panel of five UCSF medical doctors also spoke on the advanced heart care and state-of-the-art treatment available to the Asian community both locally and internationally and in collaboration with other specialties at the U.C. Hospital.
