This Chautauqua-style storytelling presentation features a Chinese American immigrant’s life in the U.S., highlighting the Chinese Exclusion Act, Angel Island, WWII and the civil rights movement.

MAHEALANI UCHIYAMA AND KAUATUAHINE POLYNESIAN DANCE COMPANY
A dancer and musician, Mahealani has been a teacher of Polynesian dance for over 25 years. The executive director of the Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance and the artistic director of the KaUaTuahine Polynesian Dance Company, she has also won numerous awards in dance, chant, singing and drumming. Mahealani’s CD A Walk by the Sea was awarded the Hawai‘i Music Award for Best World Music Album in 2007.

Devoted to teaching dance, Danny Quynh Nguyen established the Nguyen Dance Company in 1999. He is the first Vietnamese modern dancer, teacher and choreographer in the United States to receive his B.F.A. in Dance, Performance and Choreography from the California Institute of The Arts and his M.F.A. in Dance, Performance and Choreography from Mills College.

WING CHUN DEMONSTRATION ‘THE STORY AND STYLE OF GRANDMASTER CHRIS CHAN’
Grandmaster Chan Kam Shig (Christopher Chan) was the first Chinese instructor to teach Chinese martial arts to the American public. During the 1960s, Chan and his friend Bruce Lee introduced and spread the popularity of the Wing Chun system throughout the Bay Area. Chan was the chief director in charge of promoting the first U.S. Chinese Kung Fu Exhibition in 1967. The Mango Kingz
The Mango Kingz are group of seven guys, Alan Aliga, Arturo Bautista, Derrick Posadas, Janjay Coquilla, Randy Herrera, Elliott Hirai and Kapena DeLima, who have come together with the common passion for island style music and spreading aloha to those who love to groove. Mix Jawaiian reggae beats and catchy lyrics together and you get what the Mango Kingz are known for, that feel-good “Island Flava” music.
