Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund Announces 2009-2010 Scholarship Recipients

Washington, D.C.-The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF), the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted solely to providing college scholarships for Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) students, announced the recipients of its 2009 scholarships. APIASF is awarding more than $625,000 in scholarships to 225 students for the 2009-2010 academic year. Since its inception in 2003, APIASF has distributed more than $2.4 million to 1,075 deserving students.

“We are pleased to recognize our fifth class of Scholars,” said Neil Horikoshi, APIASF President & Executive Directors. “This group of students has already shown a strong sense of community and a desire to give back. They truly represent the future leaders of this country.”

APIASF received more than 3,000 applications for this year’s scholarships from outstanding students from across the country, the U.S. Territories and the Freely Associated States. The 2009-2010 APIASF Scholarship class represents students from 41 states, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia and the American Samoa. The Scholars also represent many of the diverse groups within the APIA community including: Cambodian, Chamorro, Chinese, Filipino, Native Hawaiian, Hmong, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Micronesian, Samoan, and Vietnamese. More than 50 percent of recipients are the first in their family to attend college.

“Many of our Scholars represent communities that have been traditionally underserved,” said Horikoshi. “Especially during these though economic times, we are proud to help these students obtain their true potential and provide the critical access to higher education that they need.”

This year’s scholarship recipients plan to pursue various fields of study including: accounting, business, chemistry, international relations, music, political science, sociology and social work. The Scholars will be attending more than 130 colleges and universities around the country.

Asian Art Museum’s Lords of the Samurai Exhibit

Event: Lords of the Samurai
Description: The samurai culture and code of conduct, bushido, have long captivated the imaginations and aspirations of young and old in the Western world. More than just fierce warriors, Japanese samurai of the highest rank were also visionaries who strove to master artistic, cultural, and spiritual pursuits.
Lords of the Samurai takes an intimate look at the daimyo, or provincial lords of the warrior class in feudal Japan. The Hosokawa clan, powerful military nobles with a 600-year-old lineage, embodied this duality of fierce warrior and refined gentleman.
The exhibition features more than 160 works from the Hosokawa family collection housed in the Eisei-Bunko Museum in Tokyo, the Kumamoto Castle, and the Kumamoto Municipal Museum in Kyushu. Objects on view will include suits of armor, armaments (including swords and guns), formal attire, calligraphy, paintings, teaware, lacquerware, masks, and musical instruments.
Details: June 12 - September 30, 2009, Asian Art Museum, 200 Larkin St., San Francisco

Statement from the families of Laura Ling and Euna Lee

The families of Laura Ling and Euna Lee are shocked and devastated by the outcome their trial.

Laura and Euna are journalists who went to the China-North Korea border to do a job. We don’t know what really happened on March 17, but if they wandered across the border without permission, we apologize on their behalf and we are certain that they have also apologized.

We are very concerned about their mental state and wellbeing. Laura has a serious medical condition that is sure to be exacerbated by the drastic sentence. Euna has a 4-year-old daughter who is displaying signs of anguish over the absence of her mother. We believe that the three months they have already spent under arrest with little communication with their families is long enough.

We ask the Government of North Korea to show compassion and grant Laura and Euna clemency and allow them to return home to their families.

We remain hopeful that the governments of the United States and North Korea can come to an agreement that will result in the release of the girls.

Gov. Schwarzenegger Calls for Release of California Journalists

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement regarding the sentencing of two California journalists to 12 years of labor prison by North Korea’s Central Court:

“Maria and I were saddened to learn of the sentencing of Laura Ling and Euna Lee. In addition to sending them our deepest thoughts and prayers, California stands ready to offer any resources and assistance the federal government may need to bring these two journalists home safely. Journalism is a vital part of freedom and democracy, and we are all indebted to the men and women who risk their lives around the world to dig beneath the surface to uncover the real stories. We must work to ensure the safety of journalists who search for the truth in parts of the world where the press does not enjoy the freedom it deserves.”
