Before an audience of more than 450 attendees, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard praised her fellow honorees and expressed her deep appreciation to the Chinatown Service Center for honoring her and for its work.

“Throughout my 23 years of public service, it is with a great deal of pride that I have represented Chinatown and the Chinatown Service Center.  To receive an award from this exceptional organization dedicated to improving the health and well being of the Chinese-American community is truly humbling.  I sincerely thank the Center for tonight’s recognition and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the other honorees – my new colleague in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Judy Chu who made history when she became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress, and CitiBank, which has been a great supporter of the Chinatown Service Center.”

The Chinatown Service Center honored the congresswoman for her support, including her efforts to secure $436,000 in federal funding to provide dental services and expand its health center.

“Over the years, it has been my great pleasure to work with the Chinatown Service Center and see firsthand the critical role it plays in providing linguistically and culturally appropriate services to the individuals and families of our Chinese American community,” Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard said during her remarks.  “Today the work of the Chinatown Service Center is more important than ever.  As our country works its way through an economic crisis, it is most heavily felt on the shoulders of our underserved populations.  This year’s theme, “Turning the Curve Toward Community Economic Recovery,” is most relevant as Congress struggles to fix a critical component of that recovery, our nation’s broken health care system. Congresswoman Judy Chu and I continue to work with our congressional colleagues to ensure health reform legislation not only empowers our underserved communities with access to quality and affordable health care but eliminates health disparities by providing services such as those offered by the Chinatown Service Center.”

The Chinatown Service Center (CSC) – located in Chinatown in the 34th Congressional District – is the largest community-based Chinese American health and human services organization in Southern California.  Founded in 1971, this non-profit provides culturally sensitive and language appropriate services – including primary medical and dental care – to more than 12,000 unduplicated individuals annually, most of whom are in the low-to-moderate income range.
