Flu Shot Reminder From NAPCA

Seattle, WA — The National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA) reminds Asian Pacific Islander (API) seniors now is the time of year to get their flu shots.

Researchers from the National Institute of Health (NIH) say that seniors, as well as children and those with medical conditions, have the highest risk for potentially life-threatening complications from the flu. Couple that with statistics showing nearly half of all API seniors 65 and above do not get flu shots, and it makes getting the message out to API senior communities across the nation all the more important.

“There are many reasons why seniors may choose not get a flu shot, ranging from fear to misinformation to cost,” says Christine Takada, Acting President and CEO of NAPCA. “We want to make sure that seniors know that a person will not get the flu from a flu shot, and that if they are covered by Medicare Part B, the flu shots will be given for free.”

Typically, flu shots are administered from October through March at grocery stores, drug stores and community health centers. To find a location that offers flu shots close to you click on the following link from the American Lung Association and type in your zip code http://www.lungusa.org or call the NAPCA Helpline.

Nation’s First Public Chinese Immersion School Celebrates 25 Years of Success

West Portal Elementary School is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Chinese Immersion Program.  Launched in 1984, this program was the first of its kind in the country. Today, Chinese Immersion programs are so popular that the San Francisco Unified School District recently opened its eighth Chinese Immersion program to accommodate the surge in demand.

The original program at West Portal was supported by a grassroots effort composed of parents and other community members.

Over time, interest in Chinese immersion programs has grown as participating students have demonstrated great academic success, and the demands of the21st century global economy have put the value of a multilingual education in the spotlight. Today, there are 21 immersion programs in the district, including Chinese, Spanish and Korean.

This Friday, in honor of West Portal’s 25th Anniversary, members of the media are invited to observe Chinese immersion education in action and speak with students, parents and teachers about their experience.

When:  Friday, Oct. 16 / 9:00 a.m. -10 a.m.
Where: West Portal ES / 5 Lenox Way (at Taraval)
