Los Alamitos Math Coach Presented Raytheon’s “MathMovesU – Math Hero” Award
Chia-Ho Lee, mother of two students at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Los Alamitos and the school’s math club coach, has been named Raytheon Math Hero – a distinction given to an outstanding math teacher or coach who finds inventive ways to help students excel in the subject. Each year, Raytheon invites students and faculty to nominate someone who has demonstrated a passion for inspiring students in this often challenging subject. Both the award recipient and the affiliated school receive a $2,500 award from Raytheon Company. At the award ceremony this past Thursday morning, Lee graciously accepted the accolade as a testament to Raytheon’s commitment to the next generation of engineers. She said, “Without Raytheon’s generous support to Math Counts, our kids would not be able to enjoy the fun of problem solving and improving their math skills. They are providing our students opportunities to develop a strong foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and math careers.” She then donated her $2,500 award to McAuliffe Middle School to go toward continued funding of their math club.
Chia-Ho Lee takes math outside the realm of the textbook and brings it into the real world. She shows students how math is used every day in real-world situations such as measuring recipes and teaching the importance of cost control in the food industry. She sees her time as a valuable window of opportunity to inspire the innovators of tomorrow. Budget cuts have made challenging and exciting math programs an impossibility for many schools in the district, but Lee is committed to keeping this math club open and thriving. Countless times, Lee has reached into her own pocketbook to ensure that these gifted children never become collateral of these difficult economic times.
