Ruoyi Jiang Of Ward Melville H.S., Mentored At SBU, Named Individual Grand Prize Winner In 2009 Siemens Competition
Stony Brook, N.Y. — Ruoyi Jiang, a senior at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket was named the individual Grand Prize winner in the prestigious nationwide 2009 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Mr. Jiang conducted his research at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory under the mentorship of Professor of Chemistry, Carlos Simmerling; and was supported by his advisor at Ward Melville, George Baldo, director of the InSTAR program there.
Mr. Jiang, 17, won a $100,000 scholarship for his research on chemotherapy drug resistance. He is the first Grand Prize winner of the Siemens competition to have done research at Stony Brook University in the “individual” category; twice previously, the Grand Prize “team” winners worked with Stony Brook University faculty mentors, including Professor Iwao Ojima (in 2007) and Professor Miriam Rafailovich (2001).
The annual awards were presented today at New York University. The competition is a program of the Siemens Foundation and is administered by the College Board.

Jenny Sanford, wife of Governor Mark Sanford has announced her endorsement of Nikki Haley. Nikki Haley is an Indian American running for Governor of South Carolina. She could be the second Indian American to become governor.

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma Named as Women in Government State Director
Sacramento — Assemblywoman Fiona Ma has recently been named as Women in Government State Director. Women in Government, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a national, non-profit, bi-partisan organization of women state legislators that provides leadership opportunities, networking, expert forums, and educational resources to address and resolve complex public policy issues.

17,400 Holiday Books Donated to Bay Area Organizations Serving Needy Children
Los Altos, CA — Thanks to an additional $50,000 grant from the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits Program, by the end of this year Hoopoe Books Share Literacy Program www.shareliteracy.org will have distributed over 40,000 books to help more than 31,000 underserved Bay Area children learn reading and thinking skills.
This grant will spread holiday season cheer to children with the donation of 17,400 Hoopoe books to charitable organizations and schools serving youngsters of poor and low-income families. The books (some bi-lingual English-Spanish) are earmarked for holiday gift/toy programs.
A nationwide program first introduced in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006, Share Literacy partners with early education agencies serving poverty level and low-income families, after-school programs and organizations providing ESL and adult literacy instruction.
