Last Friday, leaders in San Francisco’s Asian American community gathered at New Asia Restaurant in Chinatown to announce plans to celebrate Democratic leader for the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s 25 years in Congress.

Community leaders, including Supervisor Eric Mar gathered on Aug. 3 to announce their plans for a Nancy Pelosi Tribute leader.

Nancy Pelosi began her career as a Congresswoman for California’s 8th Congressional District in 1987 and has been a trailblazer for women in politics, becoming the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives and the first woman to lead a major political party in Congress. She has also been a friend of the Asian-Pacific Islander community, holding some of her first events as Congresswoman in San Francisco’s Chinatown. In the 25 years since Nancy Pelosi was elected to Congress, San Francisco has gone from a city with no Asian Americans in office to a model for diverse leadership—the city has an Asian American mayor, Board of Supervisors President, and Board of Education President, among many others.

Co-chairs of the Community to Honor Leader Nancy Pelosi dinner include former Women’s Chair of the California Democratic Party and activist for the Chinese Newcomers Service Center Jane Morrison, founder of the Charity Cultural Services Center Harrison Lim, and AsianWeek Foundation’s Ted Fang.

The tribute to Nancy Pelosi is set to be held on Tuesday, August 28th at New Asia Restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. Despite its location, organizers pressed that the tribute is on behalf of all Asian American ethnic groups, not just Chinese-Americans.

The special tribute dinner at New Asia is expected to have 900-1000 attendees. Morrison, 92, a prominent activist and longtime friend of Pelosi commented, “I think it’s going to be a wonderful party.”
