In a brilliant play, currently making its West Coast Premier at the Berkeley Rep’s Roda Theatre, Playwright David Henry Hwang held a capacity audience in awe with tears of laughter and gasps of anguish and surprise.
The comedy “Chinglish” has many scenes of doing business, making love, showing disdain, and real power plays. Translations in languages from Chinese to English and vice-versa from English to Chinese become horribly mixed-up and hilariously misunderstood. Real cultural gaps.
At a recent community service vent, members of the UC Chinese Alumni sponsored a special Member’s Night that sold-out like wildfire with members and friends wanting more tickets and raving for more, thus causing the Berkeley theatre to extend the run of “Chinglish” two extra weeks into October, with tickets already practically sold out. Contact the Berkeley Rep for ticket information and availability. For more info visit http://www.berkeleyrep.org.
What a nice series of cal Alumni events, as Directors Pamela Joyce and Ernest Lee headed two Cal Women’s Volleyball Games, a showing of the documentary of “Autumn Gem”, the first Chinese woman revolutionist, the comedy “Chinglish” and now the upcoming Big Game Dinner Reunion.

Cheers to Warren and Jennie Louie Chin, who celebrated 7 years of marriage by hosting a luncheon and cake for over 90 seniors at the Berkeley Chinese Community Church. Warren retired after working as a pharmacist for 53 years, but Jennie still swims 26 laps, 3 times a week and does water aerobics! Congratulations!
