A Lunar New Year Celebration presented by Verizon was held this past weekend at Union Square in San Francisco. The cultural event brought hundreds of high schoolers, collegiates, and families to kick-off the 2013 Lunar New Year festivities.
Emceeing the “Year of the Snake” event was Nicki Sun, a self-made multimedia entertainer, and David So, a stand-up comic. Both California natives brought to the program great entertaining humor to energize and involve the crowd.
On stage were cultural performances represented by the Chinese and Korean communities with a special appearance by a few women of the Vietnamese Intercollegiate community. During the intermission of the program, guests from the crowd were invited on stage to learn how to play with Korean percussion instruments and learn how to move and play in unison.
Made popular by YouTube and the Internet, music entertainers Jayne Rio, New Heights, Jason Chen, and Kina Grannis entertained the crowd. Every youngster here had their cameras, phones, and any other recording device imaginable out and capturing every minute of this outdoor event. The latest trend set by the youth of America of online social media that helped create these Internet sensations were literally in fact helping add to their popularity as fans were tweeting and uploading images, video, and audio to the Internet.
Opportunities throughout the day allowed guests to meet and greet guest performers, a chance to answer some Lunar New Year trivia with winners obtaining a goodie bag, and a couple raffle drawings for amazing prize giveaways.
