San Francisco crowned Heidi Cheung as Miss San Francisco 2013 in the Miss America Program. She is the third Miss San Francisco title holder in three consecutive years starting with Crystal Lee in 2011 and Vivian Wei in 2012. This year San Francisco also crowned two more ladies at the program held at Mercy High School, Miss Golden Gate Raquel Fatiuk and Miss San Francisco’s Outstanding Teen Julia Li. Both Cheung and Fatiuk will next move on in competition to the Miss California Pageant in Fresno, CA. There they will compete with delegates from other cities and counties in California. Li will also compete with other Outstanding Teens within the state of California as well.

Following the program Miss San Francisco 2013 Heidi Cheung shared with me a little bit about herself. Heidi is Chinese, born in Hong Kong, who can speak fluent Cantonese and up until a few years ago gained full U.S. citizenship. Currently Cheung is attending Cal Berkeley with a double major in Legal Studies and Anthropology. She also is minoring in Dance and Performance Studies. One day she hopes and dreams to attend law school to become a lawyer and then through her experience become a judge.

Influenced personally by her family members who have battled or lost their lives to cancer, Cheung’s platform was “Giving Hope by Giving Back: American Cancer Society”. Currently she volunteers for the East Bay American Cancer Society branch.

At the age of six, Cheung started to play the piano. In her spare time outside of studying, she teaches piano. As her talent for this year’s program, Cheung performed Nikolai Kapustin’s Toccatina from his Concert Etudes Opus 40. In her experience, Cheung has volunteered for the United States Open Music Competition, performed for senior homes, and Nordstrom.

In 2009, Cheung was crowned Miss San Francisco’s Outstanding Teen. She competed in the state competition and placed 4th Runner Up to Miss California’s Outstanding Teen 2009. The Miss America Organization has given her such great memories, taught her valuable skills that she can use in life, and the program allowed her to meet great people. Cheung speaks highly of the volunteers of the Miss America Organization that keeps the program going with all of their love, passion, and devotion. As Miss San Francisco 2013, Cheung is excited for this year and will strive to best represent her title.
