SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On August 5th and 6th , 40 teachers from more than 35 public and independent secondary schools, representing 8 Bay Area county unified school districts, attended the 1990 Institute’s Inaugural Teachers Workshop on China’s Growing Global Impact. Among the guests in attendance were Karen Leong Clancy (UC Regent), Feng Cui (All China Women’s Federation, retired), Dr. Betsy Kean, (Interim Dean, Graduate College of Education, San Francisco State University), David Lei (Vice Chairman, Chinese American Community Foundation and 2013 KQED Local Hero Award honoree) and Tonia Chao Hsieh (Board member of Roses in Concrete and co-founder of KarMa Pictures) to name a few.

In 2012, the 1990 Institute conducted a focus group with representatives from Lowell High School, Oakland Unified School District, Cupertino High School, Menlo School, and the Committee of 100’s Summer Institute. Current California state curriculum standards do not cover the most recent 30 to 40 years of Chinese history, a period when China transformed itself from a third world country into one of the world’s leading political and economic powers. The outcome of the focus group led to the creation of theTeachers Workshop, with the goal of bridging this gap and giving teachers resources to add to their classroom curriculum to enhance their students’ understanding of today’s

The first day of the workshop was organized around the topic of China in Transition, while the second day of the workshop focused on Current Social and Political Issues. The workshop featured presentations and panel discussions with China experts, including a keynote speech by Dr. Tom Gold, Professor of Sociology, Center for Chinese Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Other presenters included Dr. Mark Henderson, Program Head of Environmental Studies and Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Mills College; Helen Wang, co-author of The Chinese Dream: The Rise of the World’s Largest Middle Class and What It Means to You; John Kamm, Human Rights Advocate; George Koo, China Business Consultant; Dr. Roselyn Hsueh, Assistant 1990 Institute Press Release: Teachers Workshop Professor of Political Science, Temple University; Ling-chi Wang, Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Berkeley; and Pete Hammer, Librarian and Professional Development Facilitator, San Francisco Unified School District.

Prof. Scott Rozelle, Helen Farnsworth Senior Fellow and Co-Director, Rural Education Action Project (REAP), Stanford University and Matthew Boswell, Project Manager, Rural Education Action Project (REAP), Stanford University, presented the curriculum units in China in Transition: Economic Development, Migration, and Education, a publication of the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE). Workshop participants also devoted an afternoon to curriculum development, and ways to incorporate the workshop materials into their teachings in the classroom.

The teachers were also offered an online forum for sharing resources and curriculum materials, so they can continue to network with each other after the workshop.

The 1990 Institute is a San Francisco Bay Area 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging the people of the United States and China through education, philanthropy and collaboration. Founded by a group of prominent academic, business, and community leaders, the Institute began as a think tank researching major economic and social issues related to China. We have produced books and issue papers, and sponsored conferences and symposia. Over the years, the Institute expanded its mission and developed education and philanthropic programs in China in the areas of girls’ education, cross-cultural exchanges, and business education through microfinance support.
