In 1964, Friends of the SFPL held its first Book Sale to raise funds for the Library and provide quality, affordable books to the San Francisco community. Forty-eight years later the Big Book Sale is a San Francisco favorite event, a six-day book bonanza that draws over 15,000 attendees to Fort Mason. Friends of the San Francisco Public Library is a member-supported, non-profit organization that fundraises, advocates, and provides financial support for the San Francisco Public Library.
