The National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA) and the Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California (APIDC), are pleased to announce its partnership with the Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) to host their second “Laughter is the Best Medicine” event on November 2nd, 2013 in Oakland from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.. This will be an evening of fun to help raise awareness about a serious issue ~ the importance of mental health and disabilities in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities.
Mental health and disabilities remain topics that are not often discussed in the community. This is often due to stigma, lack of adequate information or fear of not knowing what to do or say. NAAPIMHA, APIDC and OACC are all committed to improving the quality of life within the diverse AANHPI communities and through events such as this, we hope to raise not only the awareness but also change how we address these issues. Individuals who have experienced challenges are also very capable of leading productive, meaningful lives if given the proper support, resources and services.
While the primary focus is to raise awareness around the challenges facing our community, it is important to also celebrate life and recognize the healing power of laughter. We are asking for your help in making this event a success. If you cannot attend, we would greatly appreciate a donation to support our outreach and advocacy efforts. A donation in the Friends or higher category will get recognized in the events booklet. We thank you for your support and look forward to traveling on this journey of hope and recovery together. For further information about the event please contact JR Kuo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
