AsianWeek was the vision of my late father, Mr. John T.C. Fang.
My father emigrated from China in the early 1950s and lived in America for the last 40 years of his life. During this time, he adopted America as his home, and like many before and many since, he became a product of two cultures: not just Asian and not just American, but both – Asian American.
Throughout his life in America, my father was deeply concerned with the betterment and welfare of his fellow Asian immigrants – and also of those Asian Pacific Americans who, like his three sons, were born in America and were not fluent in their native language. He saw the need for a national publication that would help unite the community by chronicling the Asian Pacific American experience and involving Asian Pacific Americans in the democratic process.
AsianWeek, the only English language newsweekly for Asian Pacific Americans, has become the link for American born Asians to better understand their community. It has become a bridge for Asian immigrants to mainstream American culture. Likewise, it is the primary vehicle for mainstream America to learn of the concerns and aspirations of one of the country’s fastest growing communities.
